- Problem – A damaged concrete floor needed a durable floor system.
- Solution – Sterling Metallic Epoxy
What is a metallic epoxy floor? It is a special multi-layered epoxy floor coating that incorporates the use of a metallic additive mixed into a clear epoxy coating to create exotic effects. This metallic powder continues to move through the epoxy as it cures creating a lava like flow or pearlescent design.
This popular floor design is seen more and more in residential and business settings alike. Our customer in Middlebury CT called Custom Concrete Solutions when she needed an expert installer. The final look is comparable to a Cream Polished Concrete job or a flowing Marble appearance.
The existing floor had many large cracks and spalling. We used our large grinders and urethane cement to fill the cracks and smooth the surface.
After carefully cleaning the area we applied a layer of colored epoxy primer. A heavy mil thickness is best because it helps flatten the rough floor condition. We cleaned and sanded the floor once more.
Cure time for the epoxy layer is roughly 12 hours. Temperature plays a big part in determining the cure time.
Since epoxy can amber over time, we apply a coating of polyurethane which prevents this from happening. The polyurethane coating will take 24 – 48 hours to dry. It can then be walked on, and fully cured after 30 days. Urethane is also more stain and abrasion resistant than epoxy. This customer selected a Satin finish urethane which is the popular choice lately.
